Dubai international airport authorities have decided not to set up the new technology of full-body scanners, as it opposes Dubai's national customs and ethics.

"I do not feel that it is necessary for us to implement such a technology while we are operating different methods and have different avenues that have worked so far," the Dubai police's director of airport security, Ahmed bin Thani said.

He said "The use of such a device violates personal privacy and it raises a very sensitive issue for passengers, in addition to the fact that it does not comply to our national ethics."
Bin Thani stated that the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) does not require airports to carry out a full body scan.

"The acquisition of such devices is based on the decision of every member state of the ICAO and is not a mandatory measure instructed by them," he explained.

According to the Dubai police's deputy director of airport security, Omar al Amri, Dubai International Airport has over 3, 200 operational security cameras in its three terminals and may possibly introduce face-recognition technology to improve safety.

Dubai is a cosmopolitan city, however visitors still have to adhere to Islamic tradition and local culture. Authorization has to be given before anybody can photograph a local woman. Most cover themselves with black or colored Abayas and some choose to cover their lips and eyes.

While women are not to be photographed at the Dubai airport, France has finally ratified the bill that bans the wearing of the full Islamic veil in public. Although it has been reported that some wealthy men are set to pay the penalties, anyone violating the law will be heavily fined.

“The full Islamic veil challenges the values that we share and the very principles according to which we live together,” says the French justice minister, Michèle Alliot-Marie, who drafted the bill.

The ban would also impinge on foreigners, particularly affluent tourists from the Gulf states.

While hit with a 150 euro fine for women wearing a full face veil in public, the bill stipulates a much harsher penalty for men found guilty of compelling their daughters or wives to cover their face: a one-year jail sentence, plus a 15,000 euro fine.

France has banned all religious symbols, including Islamic symbols from being worn in public schools and government buildings.

The Spanish government moved to ban all religious symbols from public spaces such as, schools, hospitals, jails and barracks, as well as in all official ceremonies. The aim was to provide ‘religiously neutral public spaces’.
