Pepitone, Headmaster of Westlake Preparatory School and the Westlake Academy said; ‘Even in the middle of his campaign, Alan Bernstein, knows the tremendous difference a good educational and social experience can make for special needs students. Alan and his wife Karen adopted a child from Russia, five (5) years ago and their adoption experience made them strong advocates for learning disabled and special needs children. ‘
Having witnessed so many special needs children in Russia waiting to be adopted in conditions that were ‘unacceptable’, Bernstein and his wife knew they wanted to do something for these children when they returned home with their new son. They wanted to become involved and active and were looking for the right opportunity – Westlake Academy was that opportunity.
‘We investigated the school’s program and the methods Westlake Academy was using and saw what a difference the school was making in these kids lives’ Bernstein said.  ‘We decided that this was the type of school we could support and asked how we could help.
Bernstein and his wife Karen are currently organizing a schedule of events that will help raise needed funds for the many programs and projects both in place and planned. In addition he and his wife will be spending time at the school as volunteers.
‘Our school is so proud that Alan and Karen saw what we were doing and felt it was the kind of school they wanted to be a part of.’ Dr. Pepitone said. ‘We are all very excited about what this will mean for our kids.’

Westlake Academy is a private non-profit school dedicated to the education of students with specific learning challenges, special needs and developmental disabilities. The school is located in its own free-standing school building specifically designed to meet the physical and social needs of students that will benefit from instructional methods for learning intervention that support a wide range of ESE programs. The Academy provides a comprehensive curriculum that supports a wide range of ESE programs; visual and auditory processing issues, Attention Deficit Disorder Asperger Syndrome, the acquisition of language and communication skills, Autism, academic, pre-academic, independent functioning and socialization skill areas.
Approved for McKay and SUFS Scholarship Programs as well as Title I Services, the school provides an academically based educational model of Individual and Classroom Programs for the instruction of students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
