July 19, 2010 - PRLog -- Positional Hitting Book Is Changing Baseball At Every Level

Hitting has long been a mystery to those who play.  As Whitey Lockman, who spent 60 years around professional baseball as a player, coach and executive, once said, "Only God can make a great hitter."  But Jaime Cevallos has never been able to accept that.

The Dallas Morning News recently wrote a story about Cevallos's uncanny ability to turn Major League hopefulls into Major League all stars.  In it, Jarrod Johnson writes “Ted Williams once famously remarked, ‘Hitting a baseball is the hardest thing to do in sports’…Jaime Cevallos has made it his life’s mission to conquer the unconquerable.”

Cevallos began studying the popular hitting methods of the day when he was just a kid growing up in Philadelphia.  It was in college, however, that he discovered his own method.  While playing for division I Mount Saint Mary’s University in 1997, Cevallos went from a lifelong average hitter, into one of the best hitters in the league.  He raised his average from .197 to .364 and raised his OPS by .501 points from his freshman to sophomore years.   He did it by spending time hours in front of the mirror, trying to match his swing positions with the pictures of pros he had cut out from Sports Illustrated.  He discovered that changing the positions one achieves through the swing can lead to extraordinary improvements.  He had stopped following the advice of others and looked into the baseball swing on his own.  What he had found furthered his love for the baseball swing.

Realizing that nobody else was teaching the things he had discovered, Jaime dedicated the next ten years of his life to learning more about the swing.  He filmed hitters at all levels of baseball, searching for more answers.  Particularly, he wanted to know three things: 1) What are the key positions, 2) Why do they work to the hitter’s advantage, and 3) How does one train to achieve them quickly.

In 2007, he began instructing Major League Baseball players and helping them achieve better positions through the swing..  As he worked with players, word began to spread.  He named his method “Positional Hitting.”

In the two years prior to working with on Positional Hitting, Tampa Bay Rays’ Ben Zobrist had 3 home runs and a .200 batting average.  In the two years after, Zobrist hit 39 home runs with a .285 batting average.  In 2009, Zobrist won the Rays team MVP award with 27 home runs and a .297 average.

Cevallos's new book, Positional Hitting - The Modern Approach to Analyzing and Training Your Baseball Swing, explains how experts within baseball have long misunderstood the baseball swing.  In it, he explains his own story and love affair with the swing, but most importantly, he offers a brand new approach to analyzing and training the baseball swing to achieve immediate results.  Positional Hitting is now available at www.theswingmechanic.com
