July 16, 2010 - PRLog -- Keene, NH – After the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon offshore oil drilling platform, experts acknowledge that the thousands of barrels of oil leaking into the Gulf of Mexico each day represent the largest man-made environmental disaster in American history. As a responsible corporate citizen, C&S Wholesale Grocers is making charitable investments to help people, damaged ecosystems and affected wildlife on the Gulf Coast.

“C&S is making cash and in-kind donations to nonprofit organizations with strong track records of making a difference for people, the environment and animals,” said Gina Goff, C&S Director of Community Involvement. “Our donations will assist, at least in a modest way, relief efforts, cleanup and recovery along the Gulf.”

To date, the company has contributed to the following:

Greater New Orleans Foundation Gulf Coast Oil Spill Fund: offering short- and long-term support for fisherman and their families (http://www.gnof.org, New Orleans, La.)

Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana: for costs involved in training volunteers committed to beach, bayou and marsh hazardous materials cleanup (http://www.crcl.org, Baton Rogue, La.)

National Wildlife Federation for expenses connected to wildlife rescue and rehabilitation efforts (http://www.nwf.org, Reston, Va.)

Additionally, C&S has made an in-kind contribution of more than 17 tons of child-friendly food to these members of the Feeding America network for use in local BackPack Programs. These programs meet the needs of hungry children at times when other resources are not available:

Second Harvest Food Bank of Greater New Orleans (http://www.no-hunger.org, New Orleans, La.)

Bay Area Food Bank, serving the Central Gulf Coast states of Florida, Alabama and Mississippi. (http://www.bayareafoodbank.org, Theodore, Ala. and Milton, Fla.)

C&S is also making a difference on the Gulf Coast through its support of The Conservation Fund’s Go Zero® Program. More than 14,300 native trees have been planted, restoring damaged ecosystems in three Gulf region National Wildlife Refuges
