July 16, 2010 - PRLog -- Most delivery vehicles using the UK roads are half empty and some are travelling around completely empty, clogging highways, wasting fuel and adding to unnecessary carbon emissions.

Courier services company ANYVAN is calling for better use of the country’s delivery vehicle space in an effort to help cut carbon emissions and make the UK transport system more efficient.

The delivery auction site http://www.anyvan.com says that over 50% of vans and lorries travelling around on jobs are only half loaded and not filled up to their legal capacity. What’s more, one in six vans are empty.

Angus Elphinstone, Chief Executive Officer of courier services company ANYVAN, said:
“Every few days we hear calls for better use of our road network. There’s talk of congestion charging and cut backs on road building, yet we hear very little about fully utilising the van space, and indeed lorry space which is on the roads at the moment. This should be a priority.

“Estimates suggest that road congestion is only going to get worse. With road building programmes being delayed, the economic recession coming to an end and the population increasing by 20% over the next couple of decades, the UK road network is in danger of grinding to a stop.

“The whole ethos of our company is based on delivery auctions which effectively absorbs empty space within the transport system. It is the most cost-effective way of not only reducing mileage carbon emissions, but also reducing road congestion.”

Editor’s Notes:

1. ANYVAN.com was founded in 2009 by co-founders Angus Elphinstone and Ben Goor.
2. The website is based on a user listing the items they want to move at ANYVAN.com for FREE; then getting bids from delivery companies going that way; and, then choosing the most suitable bid and arrange details.
