A climate sea change? Radicalizing solutions to global warming

Global climate adaptation, together with other natural disasters, threatens to strain the world's relief resources

July 15, 2010 - PRLog -- During the UN Conference of the Parties (COP 15) in Copenhagen in 2009, developed nations promised to contribute to a climate change adaptation and mitigation fund to assist developing countries. The Bangladeshi Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, has twice this year called on countries at the climate change summit to quickly release funding for Bangladeshi regions that are vulnerable to climate change-related problems, such as cyclones, flooding and rising sea levels.

UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon has thrown his weight behind the move, saying: “Under any circumstances we must not balance budgets on the backs of the world's poorest people.” As ensuring Environmental Sustainability is the seventh Millennium Development Goal (MDG), providing renewable methods of achieving that aim is vitally important. In a letter to leaders before the G20 in Toronto earlier this year, Mr. Ban stated: “I encourage support for initiatives that will sustain recovery efforts while enhancing global economic stability, environmental sustainability and achievement of the MDGs.”

Global climate adaptation, together with other natural disasters, threatens to strain the world's relief resources. Those implementing aid and relief can create more collaborative, cost-effective and sustainable solutions or have those strategies imposed by donors.  Donors similarly can work together on unified, scalable solutions or underwrite a patchwork of disjointed, costly and often counter-productive programs that fail to solve the challenges of climate change adaptation.

In response to this issue, there will be a discussion entitled Climate Change: Innovation, Effectiveness & Accountability on Thursday July 22 at 10am at the Aid and International Development Forum (AIDF) in the Walter E. Washington Center in Washington D.C. Charley Ansbach, Managing Partner of Skystone Ryan, will be moderating a panel of speakers including Vishnu N. Jetmalani, International Energy, Environmental & Policy Advisor; Grant Dillon, International Advisor, Global Health and Emergency Response and Christina Ragsdale, Head of Communications, Sacramento Air Quality Management District.

Now in its fifth year, this event is a valuable opportunity for the aid, relief and development sector to network, build partnerships and address global humanitarian and development challenges, as well as showcasing goods and services to those who are responsible for delivery.

Registration is free to non-commercial organizations. More information, including the workshop agenda, speaker and exhibitor lists and registration details can be found at www.aidforumonline.org

Aid & International Development Forum 2010 partners include InterAction, IPOA, World Bank Publications and RedR UK.
