CLP Young Power Students Exhibit Creative Means to Reduce Carbon Footprint

July 15, 2010 - PRLog -- At an energetic and power packed project competition - CLP Young Power Programme 2010 (CLP YPP) held at Bharuch today, 40 students from seven secondary schools in Gujarat demonstrated novel ways to engage the public in achieving a low carbon lifestyle. After four weeks of thematic learning programme of the power industry, environmental issues and social responsibility the eight shortlisted teams successfully showcased their project deliverables and key learning to a panel of distinguished judges to complete this year’s Young Power Award, co-organised by CLP Holdings Limited (CLP) and its India subsidiary, the Gujarat Paguthan Energy Corporation Limited (GPEC).

Building on the theme – "Towards a Low Carbon Future", YPP 2010 highlights CLP’s commitment to a sustainable future and clean energy and to nurture local youth leaders and propel them towards becoming “green leaders” – global ambassadors of the environment.

The eight selected teams from schools in Gujarat, were assigned mentors from among CLP young talents and participated in a series of activity-based learning programmes with an array of activities such as workshops, visitations and job shadowing. As a part of this initiative they were also presented with an opportunity to visit CLP Electrodrome, India’s premier electricity museum and CLP’s GPEC plant in Bharuch. After four weeks of learning programme, the teams presented innovative project deliverables on the theme and impressed the audience and, more notably, the judging panel which included:

The champion team will join the other two winning teams from Hong Kong and Chinese mainland and take part in a ten-day Cultural Exchange Programme in Hong Kong to further their learning in mid August. The group will also have a chance to visit CLP’s Renewable Energy facilities in Shangdong Province including the Bio Mass Power Plant in Boxing County and the Wind Farm in Wei Hoi.

Addressing the audience, Mr Rajiv Ranjan Mishra- Managing Director, CLP India said, “Entering into its second year in India, the Young Power Programme has received an overwhelming response. As a part of our sustained commitment, YPP will strengthen the learning and development infrastructure for the youth of our society. All the teams have indeed come up with commendable solutions, and going forward participating in the exchange programme will be a tremendous learning opportunity and exposure for the selected students.”

The Young Power Programme, CLP's signature youth programme to promote environmental awareness and social responsibility was launched in 1999 in Hong Kong and extended its presence to India in 2009. The programme is held in three regions namely Hong Kong, the Chinese mainland and India. The programme was rolled out in three phases. In the first phase, 19 teams from Bharuch and Baroda submitted their entries under the theme of “Towards a Low Carbon Future” via an online system. A total of 8 shortlisted teams from various schools took part in a 4-week learning programme and competed for the champion award today.

Under the mentorship of 16 CLP engineers, the students had the opportunity to learn about engineering as a professional discipline and its application to the power industry while also strengthening their leadership skills, creativity, teamwork ability, business acumen, sense of social responsibility and sensitivity towards the environment.

The winners are Team Green-o-Holics from Chanderbala Modi Academy. In addition to the opportunity to participate in the Cultural Exchange Programme, the winning team will get a prize of 10,000 HKD. The first runners up are Team Bitter Sweet from Shree Gattu Vidyalaya. As an incentive, the runners up will also have a chance to visit Honk Kong together with a prize of 5,000 HKD.
