Funds raised by AIDS Walk San Francisco benefit the San Francisco AIDS Foundation. They enable it to provide services that improve the quality of life for thousands of people living with HIV/AIDS and focus prevention efforts on those at greatest risk of contracting the disease. Proceeds from the event also fund HIV/AIDS Community Grants administered by the San Francisco AIDS Foundation.
Since 1987, AIDS Walk San Francisco has raised more than $73 million for HIV/AIDS services in the Bay Area and has grown into the largest AIDS fundraising event in Northern California. This year is the 24th Annual AIDS Walk San Francisco, and in 2009, 25,000 walkers in Golden Gate Park raised a total of $3.5 million.
According to Tanner Efinger, AIDS Walk San Francisco Supervisor of Communications & Social Media, "AIDS Walk San Francisco relies on the generosity of corporate sponsors to help reduce the costs of this massive grassroots fundraising event, which means that more money will go toward critical prevention, care, and advocacy programs administered by San Francisco AIDS Foundation and more than 60 important Bay Area HIV/AIDS service organizations.
AIDS Walk San Francisco actively and continuously takes strides to make its event “greener” by instituting recycling programs, by encouraging public transportation, and by using reusable materials. Mr. Efinger added that “BDFS' donation of spoons and cups used at various check points and refreshment areas helps to continue to make this event an efficient, successful, and fun Bay Area tradition."
