LAUREL, MD, - On Saturday, July 10, as torches were passed and winners were announced, Yolanda Makle, a Maryland native competing as Ms. Latina, was crowned the new Ms. Galaxy International 2011. The pageant, held at the University of Michigan's Power Center Theatre in Ann Arbor, Michigan, brought together women from all over the world to compete. Throughout the event, Yolanda won four of the five competition categories: interview, swimsuit, fashion wear and photogenic. As Ms. Galaxy, she will spend the next year traveling and promoting the system as well as her platform of “Empowerment for women and girls!” encouraging women and girls to continue to grow and advance in personal and career goals while acting as a role model in her community. She will make her first appearance at the July 24th WNBA game to watch the Washington Mystics take on the Indiana Fever.
No stranger to pageantry, she is a two-time international titleholder, was featured as a pageant coach on MTV’s Emmy award winning series “MADE” and is the founder of the Ethnic World Pageant System, created to promote cultural diversity, tolerance and understanding. Under her direction, the pageant was featured in a one-hour documentary, “Chasing the Crown”, which aired on the Women’s Entertainment (WE) channel. Her career as a model has afforded her the opportunity to participate in national advertising campaigns with Remy Martin, J. Crew, Eddie Bauer and Macy’s
Ms. Makle is an alumna of the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and currently works as a telecommunications project manager and commercial-print model. This proud mother of two volunteers as a youth cheerleading coach as well as with several organizations in the Washington Metropolitan area that assist victims of domestic violence and youth illiteracy. Yolanda was previously awarded the President’s Volunteer Service Award in 2006 and 2007 for her community service work within the Washington Metropolitan area..
