July 14, 2010 - PRLog -- One of the greatest Olympic Icons Janet Evans was inducted on Saturday in San Diego into the National Federation of State High School Association's National High School Hall of Fame.

The five-time Olympic medalist is considered to be the greatest long-distance swimmer in history. Evans set 10 CIF Southern section records and two national records while swimming for El Dorado High in Placentia from 1987 - 1989. Her 500-yard freestyle time of 4 minutes, 37.30 seconds was the standard for nearly 20 years.

While still in high school, Evans set world records in the 400-meter freestyle and 1,500 meter- freestyle that stood for 18 and 19 years respectively in the  1988 Seoul Olympic Games. Her world record in the 800-meter freestyle set in 1989 was not broken until the 2008 Beijing Olympics.  One of the greatest Olympic moments involved Evans during the Opening Ceremony of the 1996 Atlanta Games where she passed the torch to boxing legend Muhammad Ali to light the cauldron.

The 28th Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held at the San Diego Marriott Hotel and Marina.

Now a Laguna Beach resident and mother of two, Evans is an active voice in the world of drowning prevention. She speaks often on the subject and hosted the World's Largest Swim Lesson,  a one day record- breaking event put on by the World's Water Park Association to draw attention to the importance of water safety. Evans is often called upon as a motivational speaker whether its telling youth to work hard and follow their dreams or connecting with mothers sharing her experiences of transitioning from athlete to mother or getting back into shape and staying active in the pool, the business world, and in the home.
