Inspired by his son frustration after watching CNN, Nate promised his son that together they would do something to help people who have been negatively affected by the financial crisis. Talking about his inspiration Nate said “My son sat down with me one day while I was watching CNN. He saw the stories about the president visiting the gulf oil spill, updates on what was happening in Haiti and something about the economy, job loss, and foreclosure. After watching the news for less than an hour he started asking me questions about why no one was doing anything to fix these problems so I told him that we could and would do something.”  After brain storming ideas for what he and his son could together they had one idea that they thought could make a difference for at least some people. That idea was “The Freedman’s Project”.

Nate says “The basic concept behind The Freedman’s Project is this we are going to do a documentary series for the web. For the first part of the series we are going to travel state to state interviewing families that have lost their homes or jobs, then pick ten of those families and build a ten home Eco-friendly live/ work community center around a green business that will split its profits between the families. The second part of the series would document the process of organizing and building the community and the third part of the series would show the ten community families experience through their first year living and working together. It won’t solve the problem for everyone but hopefully giving families a chance to tell their stories on camera might generate some interest in hiring these people and we know that we will definitely make a huge impact for the ten families that get chosen for the community project.

Currently the documentary is in pre-production. When asked about the projects progress Nate says “We are currently in the pre-production stage. We are planning and organizing locations for shots, trying to get families that have lost jobs or homes to write us and tell their stories, and trying to secure extra financing so that we can visit as many cities as possible. We have already shot a promo video ( view video online at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVWfSmS_Fws ) which features my sons rant about what is going on in the world and we are already interviewing families locally in Phoenix, AZ. We are working on a micro-budget but we are fundraising through Kickstarter.com trying to get local business to sponsor locations. We want to visit a mix of small and large cities in each state but if we are not able to raise the additional funds we need we will be limited to just the larger cites .
