Splendido Honored with Two Gold Nugget Awards at Regional Builders Conference

Tucson-based Retirement Community Awarded for Excellence in Residential Land Use Planning

July 13, 2010 - PRLog -- Resort-style retirement community Splendido received two Awards of Merit at the 47th Annual Gold Nugget Awards. The Pacific Coast Builders Conference-sponsored program recognizes excellence and innovation in complex design and building issues with residential, commercial and industrial projects.

The Continuing Care Retirement Community was honored in the “Best Community Site Plan of 20 Acres or More” and “Best Interior Space” categories.

“When designing the Splendido community, we wanted to find a way to intelligently utilize northwest Tucson’s beautiful scenery and landscape and create a space where people could happily live for many years,” said Sharon Harper, President and CEO of Plaza Companies, one of Splendido’s two operating partners.

Splendido is a joint venture between Mather LifeWays, an Evanston, Ill.-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of older adults, and Plaza Companies, an award-winning developer in Peoria, Ariz. Both organizations worked with Chicago-based architectural firm Solomon Cordwell Buenz to create the community’s site plan.

Mather LifeWays and Interior Design Associates, a design firm in Nashville, Tenn., oversaw the community’s interior design and space use.

“The heritage of the Southwest has been vibrantly incorporated into the spaces and furnishings of Splendido,” said Mary Leary, President and CEO of Mather LifeWays. “We made sure our efforts integrated history into the design to celebrate the beautiful location of this residence.”

Entries for the Gold Nugget Awards come from 14 states in the western portion of the United States and international entries are accepted for all countries.
