Caliza Winery Label Wins Best Of Show At America's Largest Wine Competition For California Wines

The Design By Redbarn Marketing Has Been Called Everything From “Sexy Vampire” to “Illegible.”

July 13, 2010 - PRLog -- PASO ROBLES, CA – Caliza Winery, a boutique winery owned by Carl and Pam Bowker, has just been awarded “Best of Show” for their wine label design at the Orange County Fair Wine Competition. Judged by a panel of 95 winemakers and 200 volunteers, the Best of Show award put Caliza’s design ahead of 2,972 competitors. In addition to the Best of Show accolade, the label also won First Place in the Calligraphy design category.

The design for Caliza Winery’s label and logo came from Redbarn Marketing in Paso Robles, California. The boutique agency that specializes in marketing, design and communications for the wine industry has received other top awards for their designs, but this is their first Best of Show award. “We are incredibly excited about this” said Scot Burns, owner of Redbarn. “I literally shouted out when I heard the news which made some people jump that were near me.” The design features the word “Caliza” written in a scribbled fashion - as if it were done very quickly with a broken feather quill tip pen. It is intentionally messy and hand written to reflect the casual attitude of the owners and artisanal qualities of the wine. It is also deliberately hard to read so that one has to really concentrate on the logo to decipher it. “The funny thing is we weren’t even going to present this design to the owners, but Pam saw me file something away and asked me to show her what I was hiding - I reluctantly showed her and it ended up being their favorite” said Burns.

The Orange County Fair Wine Competition, which is run by the Orange County Wine Society, is America’s largest competition for California wines. This year the contest had 2,973 entrants, each of which were automatically included in the label competition. Labels are initially separated into 15 categories such as Calligraphy, Graphics, etc. and voted on. From there each category gets narrowed down to 12 finalists and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place are awarded. Finally the Best of Show is voted on from all of the category winners. “The Caliza label won because it was very bold and strong” said Marjorie Trout who runs the label competition with her husband Bob. “It was also in one of the strongest fields for competitors.” All winning labels will be on display at the Orange County Fair from July 16 – August 15 and also in a book that will be available at the same time.
