Antiperspirants - Antiperspirants are well known and easily available solutions to normal perspiration problems. They can be effective to a point but may not be powerful enough to cure truly excessive sweating problems. They can be found at most local grocery stores, convenience stores and pharmacies. There are many home remedies available that may also be effective. When searching for either an over the counter antiperspirant or a home remedy, look for aluminum chloride as an ingredient. This has been known to produce good results.

Prescription antiperspirants - When over the counter antiperspirants don't do the trick another alternative is a prescription antiperspirant. Many of these contain aluminum chloride hexahydrate, a prescription strength compound that is applied nightly for a week or more. The aluminum salts are absorbed and accumulate in the sweat ducts eventually restricting their ability to produce sweat. This is especially effective for curing excessive underarm sweating but less so for sweaty soles of the feet and palms of the hand.

Iontophoresis - This involves electrical stimulation through your skin to the areas that cause the production of sweat. The current is applied to your skin for 10-20 minutes at a time and two to three of these sessions are required each week. The good news is that there is little to no pain involved other than the pain of scheduling and attending that many doctor appointments each week.

Botox - When you think of Botox you probably think of Hollywood and the drum tight faces of celebrities. This is a common use for Botox but it can also be used to reduce the amount perspiration a person produces. It is basically a muscle poison and can be used to reduce the volume of moisture produced and is especially effective when used in the area of the armpits. When Botox is injected into multiple areas (about 20) around the armpits excessive sweating can be controlled for a period of about 6 months.

Surgery - Surgery is by far the most extreme solution to the problem of excessive sweating. Only in the most severe cases is this necessary and therefore it's not common. Sympathetic Nerves are the nerves that cause excessive perspiration. Surgery (Endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy) interrupts these nerves reducing the amount of sweating. A special endoscopic instrument is implanted between the two ribs below your armpit in the chest. This reduces the nerve supply to the sweat glands, reducing the sweat response. It works very well but can be difficult to get "just right" and can affect sweating in other parts of the body.
