July 11, 2010 - PRLog -- The worst of the contraction in the Swiss banking sector has passed, with the stabilisation of global  capital markets bolstering the investment banking arms of the country's two major international banks,  UBS and Credit Suisse. We caution that while the declines in foreign assets have ended, this does not  mean a sharp bounce in growth should be expected. We hold to our core view that the contractions in the  international assets of the Swiss banking system are reflective of structural shifts in global credit  conditions. That said, the domestically oriented banking system remains healthy, which should contribute  to aggregate asset growth of 5.0% in 2010.    The worst effects  of the global  financial crisis on  the Swiss banking  sector have passed,  with the  contraction in  aggregate assets  likely to slow  considerably. That  said, the recovery  is likely to be slow,  with asset growth  forecast to come in  at just 5.0% in  2010.    The most lacklustre component of the Swiss banking system will continue to be the major international  lenders (grossbanken), UBS and Credit Suisse, which account for over 53% of total assets. Positively,  their investment banking arms have showed marked improvement during Q110, reporting strong profits,  compared to losses recorded in Q109. This improvement was mainly due to a reversal in the trend in the  companies' investment banking arms, with profits from trading spiking while credit losses dwindled. The  trends in the grossbanken's income statements were mirrored in the banking sector's aggregate balance  sheet. Declines in foreign assets, which were the primary contributor to the overall contraction in banking  sector assets, have largely stopped after wiping roughly CHF1trn off of the balance sheet in 2008-2009.  We believe foreign assets have stabilised at CHF1.5trn (2004's level)
