Soon after youths lighting fireworks were chased away, neighbors indicate smoke was observed coming from the storage warehouse of the I-5 Antique Mall aka I-5 Auction Barn, on Thursday, July 8, 2010.

Rounds of ammunition were heard exploding throughout the evening, by neighbors, as the firefighters worked to combat the hazardous fire.
After the the initial response and the blaze had been squelched, heavy equipment was brought in to demolish the remains of the building. The fire department hosed the area as the demolition equipment brought the rest of the building down.
Whatcom Fire dispatch was again called at day break, Friday, July 9, when the fire reignited, probably from embers and overnight wind which blew dense smoke across I-5 and Pacific Hwy slowing traffic, once again. Whatcom Fire Department responded.
Whatcom County Fire Department had approximately 20 of their vehicles on the scene for the two alarm fire.
Tanker trucks had to be utilized to go back and forth to the nearest hydrants to supply water to the tower ladder. Our recent dry summer weather dried up the small creek that typically flows near the property, that may have been used as a water source due to the nonavailability of water hydrants at the scene.
