Security
At a level 3 security, this cross-cut shredder gets the job done. Although there are higher levels of security, a level 3 machine provides a sufficiently small cut size to put your identity theft worries to bed. We also like the cross-cut because it takes up much less space which means that you won’t have to empty your bin as frequently as you would with a strip-cut machine. There is really no reason to jump up to a level 4 machine unless you have some ultra-sensitive documents you need destroyed.
Shredable Material
The Formax FD 8400CC Cross-Cut Shredder can shred Credit Cards, Paper, Paper Clips, Staples. If you need to be able to shred something else then we recommend that you look at a larger machine and/or look for something with a little bit lower security (the higher the security the less likelihood that the machine shreds something other than paper).
Continuous Motor
This shredder is not rated for continuous use. That simply means that you will have to shut the machine down after a certain period of time to let it cool off. Now don’t let this scare you away because most people will never reach that point unless they just sit down and start shredding and shredding and shredding. If you plan on doing all your shredding at one sitting then it is highly recommended that you get a machine with a continuous duty motor, otherwise you’re just fine.
Bin Size
The Formax FD 8400CC Cross-Cut Shredder has a 20 gallon bin. We’re happy with this size because it will give you a bit more time between emptying your bin. Although the size may make it difficult to fit this shredder in a tight space, it’s always worth it in the long run to get a bigger bin size and move your office around a bit.
Throat Size
We love the 12.2 inch throat on this shredder because you can put in odd sized paper and it leaves plenty of breathing room when it comes to regular sized paper. Some of the smaller machines will crumple the paper and eventually jam because the throat opening is just not large enough.
Auto Oiler
With an Optional Auto-Oiler available on this machine we highly recommend that you get it pre-installed. The machine is pre-wired to accept an oiler so all the manufacturer has to do is hook it up properly and you’ll never have to worry about messy oil again. Automatically oiling your machine takes the guess-work out of maintenance and will most likely increase the life of your machine.
Warranty
The Formax FD 8400CC Cross-Cut Shredder comes with a Lifetime on cutters/1 Year on machine. This means that you have plenty of time to test out the machine and make sure that everything is running smoothly. Just make sure to properly care for your machine and you shouldn’t have any issues.
