July 9, 2010 - PRLog -- MONROVIA, CA – Maziar Movassaghi, Acting Director of Department of Toxic Substances Control at California Environmental Protection Agency to speak at GTCbio’s Future of Bio-Based Chemicals: From Inception to Marketplace conference on September 13-14, 2010.

Maziar Movassaghi will give a featured presentation on “Green Chemistry” at the Future of Bio-Based Chemicals: From Inception to Marketplace conference to be held this year in San Francisco, CA on September 13-14, 2010 by GTCbio. DTSC recently released the Draft Regulation for Safer Consumer Products that set forth a process for the design of safer products.  A key component of Governor Schwarzenegger's Green Chemistry Initiative, the draft regulation creates a systematic, science-based process to evaluate chemicals of concern in products. The recently released draft regulations would prioritize toxic chemicals and products, require manufacturers to seek safer alternatives to toxic chemicals in their products, and create tough governmental responses for lack of compliance. Maziar Movassaghi will address these topics and more at the Future of Bio-based Chemicals forum.

Maziar Movassaghi was appointed as Acting Director of the California Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) on March 16, 2009.  Prior to this position, Mr. Movassaghi was the Deputy Director of the Brownfields and Environmental Restoration Program for DTSC.  During his tenure, the Brownfields and Environmental Restoration Program consolidated seventeen different programs into a single cleanup program.  This action increased the total acreage that has been put back into productive use, helping communities return underutilized properties into commercial, residential or educational activities.

This conference also includes discussions on emerging feedstocks, educating consumers, starting new bio-based chemical endeavors, finding investors, and lessons from the bio-based chemicals industry abroad.  The speaking faculty will include industry professionals from the following companies: Genencor, Virgin Green Fund, Cargill, Alston & Bird LP, Huntsman Corp., Verenium, CIBC and many more.

Attendees will gain valuable insights from seasoned professionals, government representatives, legal experts, and investors on topics such as how global standardization may affect the industry, ten year projections and synergy opportunities for the bio-sectors, key strategies for effectively structuring new bio-based chemical endeavors and partnerships, and how traditional refineries and biorefineries may successfully collaborate.  This conference will provide the opportunity to hear from, and network with, the industry's best in Bio-Based Chemicals and across the bio-sectors.
