Based on the ubiquitous USB plug-and-play cabling standard, the 3.0 revision promises transfer speeds of up to 4.8 GB/second (compared to USB 2.0’s 480 MB/second) when used with compatible devices. Despite its increased speed and new nomenclature, however, the 3.0 standard is backwards compatible with the earlier USB 2.0 and 1.1; 3.0 cables are thus able to effectively function as a 2.0/1.1 cable when needed.
