Live music and entertainment on the main stage features bands including "Urban Dread," “Stowaway,"
A number of nonprofit groups will participate at the festival. Conejo Valley Neighborhood for Learning (CV NfL), with child centers and preschools throughout the Conejo Valley, will bring games designed for the preschool set. For the second year, a portion of the proceeds from Tropical Daze will benefit CV NfL, a local chapter of First 5 Ventura County.
"Tropical Daze is for the entire family and for the entire community," says Randy Strong, Tropical Daze organizer. "We particularly sought out youth-oriented nonprofit groups to participate."
EARTHS Magnet School in Newbury Park will host 10 free science experiment stations at Tropical Daze. Each station will contain a separate experiment designed for children in kindergarten through fifth grade.
Exotic birds, including macaws, cockatoos, parakeets, Kookaburras, cockatiels, soft bills and peacocks will be on display courtesy of Corey Schmidt and James Krembs. Schmidt and his birds have have appeared on "Late Night with David Letterman," "CBS This Morning," "Live with Regis & Kathie Lee," ESPN’s "The Lighter Side of Sports" and CNN’s "Showbiz This Week." "We're not a petting zoo, but kids and families can have their pictures taken with the birds. It's a great chance for kids to get close to birds and learn about these exotic animals," says Krembs, known as the "Bird Man of Simi Valley."
An authentic luau buffet and live one-hour show presented by "Na Hoaloha o Polynesia" will be featured Saturday evening, July 24 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Volunteers from the Miller Family YMCA will check in luau-goers, decorate tables, and serve food. Half the proceeds from the luau will go to the Miller YMCA, which serves Newbury Park. "The luau is a great way to help support the local Y while enjoying Hawaiian music, hula dancers, drummers and a fire-knife dancer," says Strong.
The buffet dinner includes Hawaiian chicken and beef teriyaki. Tickets are $21 per person (kids under age 5 are $5). Tickets can be purchased in advance by going to www.tropicaldaze.org.
