iGavel Auctions Lothrop Photographic Collection Sale Captures Excellent Results With 98% Lots Sold

NEW YORK, NY–July 6, 2010– Everard & Company, from Savannah, Georgia, had an auction that sold 98 percent of the lots offered. The Eaton S. Lothrop, Jr. photographic collection was one of the largest collections of cameras in private hands.

The Everard Auction’s success reflects the importance of the sale of this collection. The sale saw very competitive bidding from across the United States, Europe, Asia and Australasia.

The highest lot sold was the Jide Ferrortype Camera, which sold for more than $4,400. This lot had 22 bids. The Edison Tropical Stereoscopic Hand Camera, had 12 bids, and sold for more than $3,300. Other highlights included the Eagle Camerascope, which sold for more than $2,700 with 19 bids, and the Montauk Hand Camera, which achieved a sale price of more than $1,400 with 14 bids.

The Lothrop Collection Auction was comprised of nearly 400 lots of cameras and related material dating from the 1870’s to the 2000’s. This historic photographic collection included cameras from The United States, Germany, France,England and many other regions.

Eaton S. Lothrop, Jr. (1930-2008) was one of the earliest collectors of photographic cameras, starting in the early 1960’s. In 1968, he started the Photographic Collectors Newsletter which was the world’s first periodical on the subject, continuing until 1975. Lothrop had a particular interest in the box camera and amateur cameras and these were strongly represented in the collection.
