Having survived a 25-year struggle with anorexia that almost claimed her life, Dena Ashbaugh, Vancouver actress and former international model created, "No Numbers: Identity beyond measure". This documentary features the stories of three women who use the self-creating aspects of film to move past the practices of disordered eating to find their own voices. "No Numbers" screens at 1pm, Saturday, July 24th at Kelowna's Royal Anne as part of this year's Okanagan International Film Festival (www.okanaganfilmfestival.com)
The film questions social ideals that make us feel like we don't quite measure up and promotes the idea that feeling good about oneself is an intrinsic human right that should never be denied. Given a recent survey found one in 10 parents would abort a child if they knew it had a genetic tendency to be obese, as well as statistics showing that 80% -90% of women dislike the size of and shape of their bodies, developing a healthier relationship with ourselves and our bodies is essential. However, during these vulnerable summer months when we face baring it all, accepting our bodies just as they are can be challenging.
“No Numbers” takes on this dis-ease and offers an alternative way of being. As psychologist Aviva Laye-Gindu comments, "this film is a thoroughly engaging and intelligent voyage into the heart of disordered eating and the societal preoccupations that lend themselves to dis-ease. The extraordinary strength and courage evident in the stories of struggle and recovery remind us of the power of acceptance, creativity, and the sharing that is so vital in living fully.”
These stories offer hope and possibility. As survivor, Stacey Hamilton-Davies states, “Finally a story that is told from people that are on or have been on the inside of an eating disorder! As someone in recovery, I am both overwhelmed and in awe of those that have bravely and honestly told their stories. Thank you for giving me strength to continue on my journey towards recovery and health.”
What is there to lose? Say yes to "No Numbers" and take back the beach.
