Follow on Google News | South Florida Artist Greg Pitts Honors Ghana World Cup Soccer TeamMoved by the events of this year's competition and the devastating loss by Ghana's soccer team, Greg Pitts created a tribute to the West African nation's team.
By: D. Marian The piece, described by Mr. Pitts as "earthy", uses the colors of Ghana's flag, but is accented by purposely placed linear defects. "The cracks are necessary to understand the emotion placed into the piece. I was moved by the struggle of the game and I was taken back several hundred years in history. The cracks represent the broken hopes of the team as well as the cracks left in the hearts of a continent- both by the world cup hopes and by history." When questioned about what history had to do with the painting and a soccer game, the artist explained it this way. "It's been a struggle..a several centuries old struggle. You may or may not be aware that the majority of slaves brought from Africa to the Caribbean and the Americas came through Ghana...at a place referred to as 'The Door of No Return' at Cape Coast Castle. I was moved by the raw emotion that I saw on the player from Ghana who collapsed after the defeat, and it reminded me of the devastation depicted on the faces of the mothers and fathers of the Africans who were kidnapped and taken away. Its all connected." This as well as other creations by Greg Pitts-one of the world's most diverse self-taught artists - can be viewed at the GAB Gallery during their monthly Artwalk which will be from 7pm to 11pm on Saturday July 10th. The GAB Gallery is located in Miami in the Wynwood Art District at 105 N.W. 23rd Street. End
