Dr. Namgyal, a graduate of the Tibetan Medical Institute “Men Tse Khang” in Lhasa, Tibet, has been practicing Tibetan medicine since 1983. He escaped to India with the help of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, then advanced his studies at the Institute of Tibetan Medicine and Astrology in Dharamsala, graduating with honors. He is also an adviser for the Tibetan Institute of Medicine in San Diego, California. This Institute investigates traditional Tibetan medicine as an alternative source of physical and mental health for communities around the world.

In his lecture, “An Alternative Healing According to the Tibetan Medical System,” on July 12 at Tibet House, Dr. Namgyal will share  a “general understanding of, remedies, and balance in the diet, for the physical and mental states of the individual” through the application of the Tibetan medical system. A question-and-answer session will follow the presentation by Dr. Namgyal. The lecture is open to the public without charge, however donations are welcome. To register or for additional information, please call 212-866-4339 or email paldensakya@vikramasila.org.

Dr. Namgyal said through his experience he has seen “excellent results through Tibetan medicine in treating those who suffer, especially from types of fibromyalgia, chronic gas, neurological disorders, and menopause issues and problems.”

During his visit to New York City, Dr. Namgyal will provide private consultations by appointment at the Palden Sakya Center in New York (4 West 101 Street, #63 / CPW). Appointments are available from 9:00am to 7:00pm July 13 through July 16. There is a fee of $35.00 for the consultation, with an additional charge for prescribed Tibetan medicines. Appointments may be made by calling 212-866-4339, or emailing paldensakya@vikramasila.org.

Khenpo Wangdak noted that these visits by Dr. Namgyal will provide a continuing resource for students of Tibetan Buddhism, alternative medicine, and those seeking alternative medical advice through the application of Tibetan medicine. Dr. Namgyal's next visit to New York City will be in October 2010.

About the Ven. Khenpo Lama Pema Wangdak and the Vikramasila Foundation and Palden Sakya Centers

The Venerable Khenpo Lama Pema Wangdak is the director of the Palden Sakya Centers and the Vikramasila Foundation as well as a recipient of a 2009 Ellis Island Medal of Honor.

A graduate of the Central Institute of Higher Tibetan Studies in Benares, India, Khenpo Wangdak received his Acharya (master's) degree from Sanskrit University in 1980. A disciple of His Eminence Sakya Gongma Rinpoche and other great masters of the Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhism, Khenpo Wangdak was sent to teach in the United States as the first of the younger generation of Tibetan teachers of the Sakya Order in 1982. He became an American citizen eight years later in 1990.

For more than 27 years he has been guiding western students, teaching the tenets of Tibetan Buddhism at the Palden Sakya Centers located in Manhattan, Woodstock, and Philmont, NY; Jamaica, VT; and Dayton, OH, while also traveling and teaching at Dharma centers around the world. A skilled communicator and Sanskrit scholar, who speaks three languages (English, Hindi, and Tibetan), Lama Pema is accessible to his students who are drawn to his gentle wisdom and compassion. In 2009, he was the first Tibetan to receive the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, which ranks among this country’s most prestigious awards and is officially recognized by both the US Senate and the US House of Representatives. Six Presidents of the United States have received this award as well as many Members of Congress, prominent scientists, athletes, entertainers, corporate executives, and philanthropic entrepreneurs.

His humanitarian efforts include the creation of the first Braille system in the Tibetan language and the Vikramasila Foundation, programs of which include the Pema Ts'al (Lotus Grove) Schools in Nepal and India. The school for Tibetan children was founded in 1995 in Mundgod, South India, on behalf of the children of the refugee community of Tibetans who have lived there since the early 1960s. (The Tibetan community in Mundgod now numbers around 20,000.) In 1999, a monastery school was founded to educate ethnic Tibetan students from the Kingdom of Mustang, Nepal. The students receive a traditional Tibetan monastic education, as well as studying subjects such as English, science, and math.

Serving the Tibetan community of New York as both a spiritual and cultural adviser, Khenpo Wangdak frequently works on projects that enhance the knowledge of Tibet--its religion, art, history, and language.
