July 3, 2010 - PRLog -- Peter H. Bloom (flute) and Mark Leighton (guitar) will perform a festive concert called Suites, Sonatas and Standards, featuring chamber music by European and South American composers, along with jazz standards from the Great American Songbook.  Bloom and Leighton have performed together for over 20 years, winning praise for superb musicianship and engaging concerts spanning the classical and jazz traditions.

The program will include Grand Duo for Flute and Guitar by Mauro Giuliani (a colleague of Beethoven and Rossini in Vienna’s golden age and a leading guitar virtuoso in 19th century Europe), as well as music of French masters Francis Poulenc and Jacques Ibert, Spanish composer Pablo de Sarasate, and Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos.  Also on the program: crowd-pleasing favorites from the Great American Songbook, including music by such legendary tunesmiths as Fats Waller, George Shearing, Jerome Kern, Duke Ellington and others.

Peter H. Bloom is a soloist and ensemble flutist who tours internationally with classical and jazz ensembles and appears on 30 recordings from labels including Sony Classical, Newport Classic, Dorian, Leo Records and 9Winds. Winner of the American Musicological Society’s Noah Greenberg Award, he has given concerts from Boston to Bangkok, lectures widely, and serves as historical performance consultant for The American Museum in Britain, The New-York Historical Society, and The Boston Museum of Fine Arts.  He is an acclaimed classical artist and a noted jazz player, now celebrating his 32nd season with the internationally renowned Aardvark Jazz Orchestra.  The Boston Globe called his playing “a revelation for unforced sweetness and strength,” while Jazz Improv praised his “exquisite melody.”  A board member of The James Pappoutsakis Flute Competition, Bloom holds an MM in flute performance with distinction from the New England Conservatory of Music and a BA from Boston University.

Mark Leighton is a classical and jazz guitarist known for his wide-ranging repertoire.  He has performed as a solo recitalist and ensemble player across the Northeast, appearing at venues such as Colby College, Corning Community College, Eastern Nazarene College, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Isabella Stuart Gardner Museum, Boston’s historic King’s Chapel, Thomas Crane Library, Charlestown Public Library, and many others.  Mr. Leighton is a regular member of Copley Chamber Players.  He serves on the Applied Music Faculty at Colby College, teaches at Eastern Nazarene College, and served previously as Artistic Director of First Night Quincy.  A graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music, Mr. Leighton studied with noted guitarists Robert Sullivan, David Leisner and Sharon Isbin, among others.
