CLEVELAND, OHIO…“ The electric buzz in the hallways surrounding all us busy writer and artist bees…was very inspiring.” That’s how writer Candy Gremler describes last year’s Northern Ohio Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (NOH SCBWI) conference. This year’s 8th annual event is themed “Bringing Home the Gold—Winning Strategies for Children’s Writing & Illustrating.”
New Option for Illustrators
For the first time ever, participating illustrators are invited to challenge themselves to create illustrations based on the 2010 conference theme. Anne Moore, Art Resource Coordinator of award-winning publisher Candlewick Press, will critique selected submissions. As with previous conferences, illustrators are invited to display samples from their portfolios.
Expanded Critique Opportunities
The 2010 conference features two new opportunities to have work critiqued. On a first-come-first-
As always, both writers and illustrators can purchase slots to have their work critiqued one-on-one by a conference presenter, including picture book author and illustrator Tammie Lyon. Because critique slots fill up fast, it’s best to register early for the chance to secure one.

For 8th Year, Conference Donates Books to Northern Ohio School Children
Highlights of the 2010 event include the annual tradition of participants and featured authors donating books for school-age children. This year’s donation to Lorain’s Washington Elementary School adds to the over 1,000 books NOH SCBWI has provided children since the organization’
Registration
Registration opens July 5 for SCBWI members and opens July 19 for non-members. Total cost ranges from $105 – $200. Critique Items Due – August 4; Late Registration Begins – August 14, a $15 late fee is assessed after that; Registration Ends – August 26; No refunds after August 26.
