Follow on Google News | They sing towards a better IndiaMusic can be a strong messenger against social evil; it can communicate better than words. This is why Singing Skylarks was born
By: Venkatesan S They are a group of talented artists, musicians, dancers and other performers with a solo mission — ‘do something good for humankind’. Keeping the primary values of the group in mind, they identified music and art as the medium to achieve their mission. “Necessity is the mother of invention. That’s how Singing Skylarks came into being. I faced problems related to poverty, unemployment, illiteracy and child labour on a regular basis. The sorry state of affairs haunted me and prompted me to start this organization,” Apart from spreading messages through music, the organization is associated with NGOs like Shrishti, which works for the disabled, and ZAV Foundation, which provides counselling and helps adults lead a better life. The organization recently helped a 12-year-old boy quit smoking and drinking. John (name changed), a student, got into the habits at a tender age which affected his studies. Now he is recovering, thanks to the initiative by Singing Skylarks. “I suffered a lot due to my son’s habits. Singing Skylarks brought him out of that and saved his future. He now goes to school and performs well,” says his mother who doesn’t want to be named. He also visits Nimhans with his parents for further counselling at the Tobacco De-addiction Centre. Skylarks has many plans in future, including funding midday meals for five students for a year, in association with Akshay Patra. The organization also plans a donation scheme for physically challenged children in association with Drishti. It includes providing them with wheelchairs and hearing aids. They are also involved in project Jagriti, in which the members pledge to work against social evils. Through their vision, Skylarkars are looking forward to a better India and a better society above all. End
