One company posting particularly impressive results is South Korean food producer CJ Cheiljedang who saw profits grow a phenomenal 953.9% year-on-year (y-o-y) to reach KRW267.7bn (US$230mn) in Q409. Overall sales for the period increased by 9.8% y-o-y to reach KRW3,838.7bn (US$3.3bn). Such strong figures suggest consumer confidence is growing in line with the improving economy. Elsewhere, South Korea's Lotte Group remains focused on acquisitions and in May 2010, the group's confectionery arm, Lotte Confectionery, announced that it was looking at about 20 companies both domestically and overseas with a view to acquiring. These acquisitions are aimed at driving sales up and ultimately increasing the company's global market share. Meanwhile, the Group's retail arm, Lotte Shopping acquired the department and discount store businesses of rival firm GS Retail for KRW1.34trn (US$1.15bn). This purchase will add approximately KRW1.37trn (US$1.18bn) to Lotte Shopping's KRW12.8trn (US$11.0bn) annual revenues. South Korea's mass grocery retail (MGR) sector continues its swift process of change, with hypermarkets, discount stores and convenience stores all expanding rapidly, mostly at the expense of wet markets and traditional grocery outlets and value sales through MGR stores are expected to rise 36.7% to reach KRW87.6trn in 2014. The country's leading retailers are all keen to take advantage of this forecast growth and in late March 2010, Tesco Samsung, South Korea's third largest retailer announced that for FY11 it aims to increase sales to KRW10.8trn from KRW9.8trn in FY10. The retailer plans to open a further eight stores in the country to help it meet this aim. Activity in Q210 continues to demonstrate the appeal of South Korea's food, beverage and MGR sectors even as they reach maturity.
