Follow on Google News | Liverpool Man Wins Compensation from Ferry Company for Hearing DamageAn Isle of Man ferry company has been ordered to compensate the family of a Liverpool man who suffered hearing damage whilst working on board their boats.
By: Paul Rooney Solicitors Thomas Keefe worked as a cook for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company for more than 35 years, and it is thought that exposure to excessive noise during his time on the ferries caused him to become deaf. Keefe sued the company in 2004, and although he passed away three years ago due to cancer, his widow Carol has continued the compensation claim case appeal in his memory. Although Chester Crown Court originally ruled in favour of the ferry company, Mrs Keefe took her compensation claim battle to the Court of Appeal, who last week ordered the Steam Packet Company to pay over £3000 in compensation, as well as around £50,000 in court costs. The Court of Appeal ruled that the company had breached its duty to its employees by not performing the necessary checks into whether the noise levels on board their ships were safe. It is thought that Keefe’s victory could trigger a number of similar cases being launched against the ferry company.
