If you have ever considered being completely energy independent, then your ultimate aim is to live "off grid".
Two main factors for living off-grid.
First,
you will need to take note of when and how you use your electricity, home appliances and their use. You will not have to live without it but be aware how to use the power efficiently.
Second,
you will need to become familiar with how your solar power system works, and what kind of maintenance is required. It would be best if you become familiar with your particular off grid system, so you can repair your own solar array.

A basic off-grid system.
1 Photovoltaic array or solar array is a collection of interconnected solar cells with the same wattage and output with mounting rails. The mounting rails allow you to attach the solar array/panels to the house roof, wall or be erected on posts.
2 DC disconnect Switch. This is basically a breaker between the solar panel array and the house electrical system allowing you to switch or disconnect the system for cleaning or adding more panels.
3. Charge controller keeps the batteries fully charged and prevent overcharging.
4. Battery bank stores the home solar electricity. You will require sufficient amount of batteries for long periods of a cloudy period. 1-4 days.
5. The system meter indicates how the various components in your system are performing
6. Main DC disconnects. This is a switch between the storage batteries and the inverter.
7. Inverter. A grid-tie inverter used in a renewable energy power system is to convert direct current into alternating current and feed it into the utility grid.
8. The AC switch/breaker panel. This is the same kind of fuse panel that the power company uses to connect your house wiring to its electrical source.
9. Backup generator. Use in long periods of cloudy days or storms lasting for weeks or when the batteries get too low to run the inverter.
Each component of the photovoltaic solar power system is relatively simple and not complex or complicated. The only moving mechanical part of the system is the backup generator.
The cost of electricity is sky rocketing and it's only going to be more expensive in the future. We need to produce our own electricity, save the environment and retain a green planet.
Solar Off Grid System will save money or make money.
When the solar panels are creating more electricity then what's being consumed, the excess feeds back into the mains power grid, which your electricity company will give you credit for.
Electricity companies will either meter the electricity fed back into the grid and give you credit on your next bill, or they will install a bi-directional meter which will run backwards while your system feeds electricity into the grid.
