In Charleston, South Carolina, he meets Lucas, a slave who has run away after killing his plantation’s overseer. Jacques renames the runaway Pierre, and hides him as his slave. They both escape and travel to New Orleans, where Jacques buys a hotel and these two intriguing fugitives begin their phony master/slave relationship as they try to elude their pursuers and their pasts.
