Simio Awards $3,960 Grant to the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia

Simulation Software Award Gives University Academic Edition Licenses to Support Teaching and Research in Simulation

June 28, 2010 - PRLog -- Simio LLC, a developer of 3D object-oriented simulation software, has awarded a $3,960 grant to the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia. The Department of Science and Methods of Engineering, who received this grant, brings together 80 Ph.D. Students, researchers and professors with peaks of excellence in the fields of science automation, computer, logistics and production management, materials, mechanical, business organization, basic science and simulation.

The University of Modena and Reggio Emilia is now one of over a 150 universities worldwide to join Simio’s academic program, which offers Simio’s 3D modeling software to schools at no charge. Simio Academic Edition is fully capable software with no model size limits and includes discrete and continuous modeling, object library development, and 3D animation.

“The faculty at the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia is committed to providing the best environment for their students to learn simulation,” said Dr. Dennis Pegden, Founder and CEO of Simio. “We are honored to provide them with the best software available to teach their students."

University of Modena and Reggio Emilia will use Simio simulation software as didactic support in several degree courses, among them “Digital Control”, “Logistics” and “Industrial Automation”. Ph.D. students will also use extensively in their research projects to simulate hybrid processes and discrete event systems.

“Instructors and researchers at University of Modena and Reggio Emilia believe that Simio simulation software has very good characteristics regarding ease of use and the powerful of simulation engine,” said University Professor Cesare Fantuzzi. “We think that the software can support very much both the didactic and research works.” Students at the school will be able to model systems using intelligent objects and the software’s direct connection to Google’s 3D Warehouse – two features unique to Simio.

The intelligent objects are built by modelers and then may be reused in multiple modeling projects. These objects can be stored in libraries and easily shared. Simio’s connection to Google’s 3D Warehouse gives access to a free online library of thousands of graphic objects – providing students with the ability to solve real-world problems in visually-rich environments.

About the University of Modena and Reggio Emilia
The UNIMORE is one of the few examples in Italy of universities that are organised in a "site network" model improving in both towns where University is located (Modena and Reggio Emilia) a close cooperation with the surrounding economical districts where a huge amount of SMEs are raising. As a result, the University is working with more than 300 companies in different bi- and multi- lateral regional, national, EU and international RTD projects. UNIMORE participates to several research projects at European and Worldwide level with the “Dipartimento di Scienze e Metodi per l’Ingegneria (DISMI [Department of Engineering Sciences and Methods]) located in Reggio Emilia. DISMI has a research staff of about 80 people (40 department staff and about 40 PhD students, post-doc fellows, etc.). The Department promotes multidisciplinary researches in the area of Human-machine interaction, Mechatronic systems and devices, Control engineering, Fault diagnosis, Logistics and Industrial Automation, Agent oriented software engineering, pervasive and mobile computing, mobile agents and wireless applications.
