iPhone 4 users brand signal fault an ‘insult’

Hundreds of iPhone users logged on to the Apple iPhone 4 support forum to question a drop in signal reception on the launch day of Apple’s new smartphone, prompting the UK’s leading mobile phone comparison website to investigate the matter.

June 28, 2010 - PRLog -- According to a survey of more than 800 Apple iPhone 4 users, 93% of owners claimed to have already been affected by a loss of signal whilst using the handset to make calls, whilst 78% of owners called the fault ‘an insult’.

A flash survey of 836 iPhone 4 owners by the UK’s leading mobile phone comparison website, http://www.rightmobilephone.co.uk, has found that the reception issue, which occurs when the smartphone is gripped in a certain way -- particularly when held in the left hand, is something many iPhone 4 owners are worried about.

63% of respondents said they were particularly angered by Steve Jobs’ alleged email response, where he answered a question by an iPhone 4 handset owner about the issue with the response, ‘avoid holding [the phone] in that way’.

89% say they begrudge paying more for a ‘Bumper’ case, priced at £25, which appears to prevent the loss of signal by offering insulation to the handset’s signal receivers.

Neil McHugh, managing director of http://www.rightmobilephone.co.uk had the following to say,

“It’s understandable that any wireless phone loses cellular signal when you place your fingers or hand over the receiver, but for this fault to affect arguably the biggest mobile phone launch since the last iPhone update is surely regrettable.

“Apple has done a fantastic job of creating a huge amount of publicity around the launch, so I hope the PR response to this obvious technical flaw is better than simply telling owners to hold the handset a different way or pay more for the Bumper case.”

He continued,

“The first few days of any product launch, even for the seemingly infallible Apple, are extremely important. People queued for hours on end, and have parted with their cash on the basis that this is the phone for them. It’d be a huge shame if these people were disappointed with a lukewarm response to their worries – after all, these people have the power to influence the decision of others as to whether or not the phone sells as well as reports believe it may.”
