June 27, 2010 - PRLog -- San Diego, Ca – San Diego Boca FC (4-2-2) have inched closer to guaranteeing themselves a spot in the Western Division NPSL playoffs with a scoreless draw against Sonoma County Sol (2-5-2) on Saturday night at Helix High Soccer Stadium in front of a cozy home crowd of 1,282.

Boca FC Head Coach Papo Santos commented after the match, “The positive for us tonight was that we earned a point and kept pressure on other teams in our division. The boys played hard and deserved a better result, as we again missed far too many opportunities to put the game away. The good news is we did not let down defensively and over all we played a decent 90 minutes. Sonoma had a good night as they played a competitive match. We now have to get ready for San Jose as we travel this Tuesday for a tough road game with little rest.

Although the score sheet was never cracked, there were certainly opportunities for both teams to leave their mark. Boca FC recorded seven shots on goal, while the Sol only earned two strikes on frame, and neither team came away with anything to show for it.

In the 10th minute, a Boca FC defender misplayed a bouncing ball, creating for a Sonoma attacker a great look at goal. The shot froze keeper Steve Gonzalez, but clanged off the post before being cleared out of danger. Boca FC answered back immediately as forward Justin Picou narrowly missed connecting on the back end of a teasing cross from midfielder Rogelio Hernandez, proving to be no serious threat.

Boca FC forward Dan Antoniuk was a force to be reckoned with in the middle, repeatedly winning headers and earning shots for himself and his teammates. In the 27th minute his shot from 20 yards out was just barely pushed wide as the Sonoma goalkeeper could only get his fingertips on the ball. Antoniuk was again denied in the 55th minute in much the same fashion, and later sent a shot screaming over the crossbar in the 70th minute.

San Diego forward Justin Picou also did well to create scoring opportunities, but was unable to find the back of the net. In the 38th minute, Picou ran onto a through ball from midfielder Abraham Gomez, and tried to chip the keeper, but sent it well over the crossbar. He had another attempt from a tough angle at the corner of the 6-yard box, but was denied by the Sol goalie.

While there have been great individual performances in each game, the entire San Diego Boca FC squad has made significant strides in refining their ability to play together. They have shown great improvement since they opened the season, and it is clear to see the connections and cohesiveness of the team from the back to the front.

San Diego Boca FC will be heading to San Jose to face Real San Jose (5-1-3) in a makeup match originally scheduled for Saturday, May 22, but was postponed due to both teams participating in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. A win for Boca FC would secure home field advantage for them in the first round of the Western Division playoffs, which could prove to be very beneficial.
