As information technology becomes more integral to healthcare, Harrisburg University of Science and Technology is responding to the demand for professionals who can play a critical role in enhancing the quality of care, reducing the costs of delivery and addressing population health issues with a new graduate-level specialization in Health Informatics.
The 12-credit graduate-level specialization focuses on the technical and management aspects of the growing field of health informatics and healthcare information technology. The specialization consists of four courses—Healthcare Systems, Health Informatics and Information Systems, e-Health and m-Health, and Social Technical and Organizational Issues in Healthcare Information Technology.
“This program is an important addition to our market-driven technology focused graduate degrees,” said Dr. Eric Darr, executive vice president and provost of Harrisburg University. “The widespread use of computers and technology combined with the demand for educated employees who can merge information technology along with information management concepts and methods in the delivery of healthcare will make this part-time program appealing to many.”
The University will offer a three-credit Healthcare Systems (ISEM 541) course in the new graduate-level specialization in the Fall 2010 semester. The Healthcare Systems course is scheduled to take place 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Tuesday evenings, which provides a meaningful option for working professionals, and it is designed to address key issues in the domain of healthcare from cost to access, delivery, efficiency and politics.
The specialization is applicable to one of the three master of science programs at the University: Information Systems Engineering & Management (ISEM), Project Management (PMGT), and Learning Technologies (LTMS).
It is one of 30 graduate-level specialization options that the University hopes to offer in the future.
“Specializations like this will give students specific, timely, and relevant areas of graduate-level studies that allow them to individualize and customize their choices depending on their interests, career objectives or current, professional advancement needs,” says Darr.
The additional specializations may be delivered online, using a blend of online and in-class sessions, or on weekends.
