June 24, 2010 - PRLog -- A collection of tips and suggestions for purchasing a surgical light for your operating room.

1. In regards to size, the diameter should be at least 16 cm, and the focal length should be 65 cm or more.

2. A minimum illumination level of 2,500-foot candles is required for all surgical lights. They should rotate 360°, and be vertically adjustable through a range of at least 80 cm.

3. The bulb be able to maintain its power for at least 1,000 hours.

4. A shadow reduction test is highly recommended. If shadow reduction is a concern, consider several design features as well, including position, reflector size, optical design, and number of lamps aimed.

5. Failure of a single bulb in a multiple-bulb light head holds significantly less impact when compared to a failure of the bulb in a single bulb light head. If there is no ability to recharge the light in a single bulb head surgery can be delayed.

6. Consider the life expectancy of the bulb, and how much replacement bulbs will cost when factoring in long-term financial costs.

7. Among the many factors to consider when selecting surgical bulbs are ambient lighting, surgeon’s preferences, and the requirements of different surgical procedures.

8. Make certain that you can compensate for the heat generated by a surgical light. Be certain to provide sufficient ventilation.

9. Receiving a demonstration of the surgical light in the operating room is highly recommended.
