Harvard Negotiation & Mediation Clinical Program welcomes Jeremy McClane and Tobias Berkman

June 24, 2010 - PRLog -- The Harvard Negotiation & Mediation Clinical Program (HNMCP) is pleased to welcome two new members to its staff: Clinical Fellow Jeremy R. McClane ’02 and Associate Tobias
Berkman ’10. HNMCP has experienced rapid growth since its inception in 2006 and is the first law school clinic in the nation to focus on projects related to conflict assessment and dispute systems design.

After attending Harvard Law School Jeremy McClane clerked for both The Honorable Richard J. Cardamone (United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit) and The Honorable Thomas Penfield Jackson (United States District Court for the District of Columbia) and taught as an adjunct professor at Georgetown University Law Center. He then joined Allen & Overy, LLP in their London and Paris offices, where he led deal teams and conducted legal negotiations for international transactions. He has consulted for Insight Partners, conducting negotiation training sessions for corporate clients. For the past year McClane has acted as corporate counsel for MFS International, an investment firm. McClane will replace outgoing Clinical Fellow Matthew Smith. During Jeremy’s two year HNMCP fellowship he will serve as a supervisor to clinic students and as a lecturer on law in the popular spring Negotiation Workshop. He will begin working at HNMCP on July 1, 2010.

“I am simply delighted that Jeremy will be returning to Harvard after eight years in practice. Jeremy will bring to HNMCP litigation, corporate, and international experience combined with extensive experience teaching negotiation and dispute resolution. He is perfectly suited to this position and I know he will make a tremendous contribution to the work we do in our program,” commented Professor Robert Bordone, Director of HNMCP.

Tobias Berkman graduated in May 2010 from Harvard Law School and the Harvard John F. Kennedy School of Government. He was a student in Prof. Bordone’s Negotiation Workshop and Dispute Systems Design class, as well as in HNMCP, where he worked for two semesters on a project helping the Catholic Archdiocese of Newark deal with disputes arising from parish mergers and closings. He served as a teaching assistant for Prof. Bordone at the Harvard Negotiation Institute and in the Spring Negotiation Workshop. While at Harvard Law School, Berkman was a member of the Harvard Mediation Program, mediating small claims disputes in the Boston area. During summer jobs, he has worked on human rights in Pakistan and for the Special Court in Sierra Leone. Before beginning his joint degree work, he researched international conflict resolution and peacekeeping operations at the Henry L. Stimson Center, a think tank in Washington, D.C.; worked with Seeds of Peace, an NGO focusing on coexistence work with young people from regions of conflict; and taught fifth grade in Morocco. He will begin working at HNMCP at the end of August, 2010.

“Toby Berkman is the first alumnus of HNMCP to join our staff and I couldn’t imagine a person better suited to the position,” notes Prof. Bordone. “As an Associate at HNMCP Toby will work to concretize much of what we have learned in the early years of our program. Toby brings extensive experience in negotiation and dispute resolution before law school and I am confident that with his exceptional emotional intelligence and cognitive ability that he will add tremendous value to the work we do with clients and students.” Berkman will work on several writing projects with Prof. Bordone, develop teaching and case materials for the clinic and the Negotiation Workshop, and working closely with the student organization Harvard Negotiators.
