The author of this book has to remain anonymous for his own protection. He is referred to throughout as ‘Six Hundred’.

Why are your taxes being thrown away? Benefit Fraud is a multi-billion pound industry? 99 Plus Publishing has decided that this book has plenty to reveal and that this story needs to be told.

The book centres on cases that give an overall impression of tough and thorough investigations that saw this former Special Investigator's downfall with the pressure of his workload. Despite this, Six Hundred refused to accept a new policy behind investigating Benefit Fraud because it did not act as a deterrent. He refused to skim over cases and move onto another because he knew the fraudsters would re-offend in double quick time. The policy was driven by the wrong principles. Six Hundred believed that this was the biggest fraud of all.

Six Hundred investigated over 2,000 cases, the book reveals how he dealt with 30 of these cases of suspected Benefit Fraud ranging from an attempt to get an extra £10 to cases that were multi-million pound frauds. No other book has been published regarding the investigation of Benefit Fraud. Even if there had been, it just could not contain the mix of cases described here; an educationally sub normal man, a man mixing with the notorious Richardson brothers, a man connected to the Brinks Mat robbery not to mention other hardened criminals. Notwithstanding these, there is a host of other more typical cases that were pursued until he got the evidence to prove the fraud.

Six Hundred's core belief was that his actions needed to act as a deterrent. After the department's policy changed and overpayments were no longer counted for statistical purposes, he continued his pursuit to obtain the evidence to prove benefit had been overpaid. He knew that the recovery of the overpayments wiped the smile off the fraudsters face and this was a real deterrent. For the department, it was also highly cost effective, another absolute essential in his ethos.

He tells what drove him. And what led to his retirement at the peak of his highly successful career aged just 43. He subsequently suffered with periods of depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and in 2006 he was diagnosed as suffering with Bipolar Affective Disorder. This latest diagnosis explains why he again investigated the man who had threatened to kill him before he went to prison and had over £4m of stolen property confiscated. Six Hundred did the exact opposite of what this felon told him to do when he confronted him having gathered the evidence the police had not been able to obtain.

Finally, Six Hundred still fears for his life because this villain is out of prison, out of pocket and has a massive rancour.
