Alfa Travel: Rhossili Bay in South Wales Named Britain’s Best Beach

June 22, 2010 - PRLog -- A recent survey has named Rhossili Bay in South Wales as Britain’s best beach.

Twenty four beaches were shortlisted for the Cadbury Flake 99 Great British Beach Awards, and Rhossili Bay saw off competition from some of the best-known holiday resorts in the UK to take the prize.

The Welsh resort was a runaway winner in the polls, taking around 47 per cent of the votes compared to second-placed Tresco in the Isles of Scilly, which took just 19 per cent. Popular seaside resorts Blackpool and Margate were tied in third place, each taking 10 per cent of the vote.

Rhossili Bay is a stunning three-mile stretch of golden coastline, lining a curved bay on the most westernly tip of the Gower Peninsula, which was recognised for its beauty over 50 years ago when it became Britain’s first Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Exposed to rolling Atlantic swells, the idyllic spot is a favourite with surfers. The remains of shipwrecks can be seen at low tides, including the Helvetia which ran aground in 1887.

David Taylor, deputy managing director of ice cream manufacturer Fredericks Dairies, said: "It's fantastic to see the great British public getting behind the campaign with over 7,700 votes cast. It just goes to show how treasured our beaches are and congratulations to Rhossili Bay for coming out on top."

Lord Mayor of Swansea Richard Lewis, a Gower councillor, said: "The views at Rhossili are among the best in the world and this award is the latest in a long line of accolades for the beauty spot."
