This week Simprentis was in Africa delivering its New Geophysics Course with our partners UniGEO. Like Simprentis, UniGEO, work to bridge the gap between academia and industry; specializing in providing high-level education within petroleum geosciences. To implement this they have created GeoCLASS, an e-learning platform like OilSim containing topics aimed at teaching petroleum related geophysics.
Blending elements from OilSim and GeoCLASS, the course ran for 5 days, covering the fundamental geophysics of the upstream oil and gas sector. This included magnetic surveys, gravimetric surveys, seismic acquisition, seismic processing, elastic waves, seismic attributes, reservoir properties and reservoir monitoring. At the end of the week everyone took part in OilSim and GeoCLASS challenges, putting into action their newly acquired knowledge of earth sciences.
What makes OilSim and GeoCLASS such effective learning platforms is their ‘learn by doing’ technique. By generating a virtual experience, knowledge and meaning are gained a great deal faster than studying in an ordinary classroom environment. This creates the perfect induction tool for educating anyone in geophysics and the applications of Earth Sciences within Oil and gas sectors.
