Taipei, Taiwan/ International - National Taiwan University students attended a lecture on animal advocacy and participate in a grass roots campaign to make a plea for the whales.
Concerned that with days left that the current existing ban on whaling may cease to exist, a number of pro whaling nations are seeking to remove the current protection whales have and allow commercial whaling to resume. SAAW international has provided a website for concerned individuals to contact delegates of the (IWC) International Whaling Commission, heads of state and other government officials of all pro whaling nations and supporting nations. Countries like Australia are declaring the need to move towards a complete ban on all forms of whaling, ongoing international public support is essential to their campaign. WhalingNOMore.org provides the tools to take action by writing a letter along with personal remarks, ways to bring awareness by sharing with others and educate on the facts while provinding the latest updates (on the IWC conference, related whaling issues and other great links).
According to the science and a recent report, slaughtering the whales for scientific study is simply unnecessary. The scientific data that is collected by using lethal methods are not required by the IWC. The research that results in killing whales has no actual benefit to humans or the whales themselves with many of its experiments deeply questioned and labeled by IWC members as bizarre and useless. By implementing the proposed agreement of the pro whaling nations and its supporters, Japan, Norway, Iceland and Korea (Korea is considering whale hunting) will be granted permission with full support of the IWC for commercial whale hunting in waters once considered a sanctuary for whales.
SAAW is concerned about the cruelty of the whale hunt but also shares concerns for the ecological, environmental and economical (whale watching tourism) impacts of killing these gentle creatures. If the proposed plan is accepted, the IWC has failed its purpose to serve the whales and the people's desires to protect and uphold the true conservation of whales.
