For green-minded consumers, the lithium ion battery may be a happy medium for the electric vehicle. Because lithium ion batteries are lighter than nickel-metal hydride batteries (the type used in Toyota’s Prius hybrid electric cars), lithium has become an attractive alternative to car manufacturers. In fact, General Motors intends to use a lithium-ion battery for certain models of its plug-in hybrid. Toyota is also planning to use lithium batteries for certain models of its hybrid electric cars.

With the expanding use of lithium batteries, some industry observers are concerned that there may eventually be a shortage of lithium to make these batteries, particularly in South America and China where most lithium mines are found. But there is a U.S.-based mineral company that has a vision to develop world-class lithium projects in other parts of the world, particularly in the United States, where the Borate Hills Project in southwest Nevada is expected to produce lithium and boron. This Company is American Lithium Minerals, Inc. (OTC.BB:AMLM) and the Project is so promising that Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation (JOGMEC) has just entered into a memorandum of agreement with American Lithium to enter into a joint venture to move the Borate Hills Project forward, potentially towards successfully mining lithium. With the ever-increasing need, the potential expansion of lithium mining in the U.S., American Lithium has positioned itself well for the future.

According to the USGA, demand for lithium destined for battery usage is predicted to grow by 20% per year! This company could be in the spotlight, especially as there is a question how much offshore drilling can recover after BP.

Lithium is anticipated to lead the charge toward green energy. Presidential Candidate, Barack Obama said during the election process that (my) "Number one priority when I get into office (will be) finding the new driver of our economy... There’s no better driver that pervades all aspects of our economy than a new energy economy." And now BP has engendered America with a real desire to search for an alternate source of Energy, and lithium may just be that source.

But Lithium is so much more
