The new automobile trend: LED Daytime Running Lights (LED DRL)

June 18, 2010 - PRLog -- By 2011, the EU is seeking to make use of Daytime Running lights as a requirement on all new vehicles. The idea revolves around studies that have proven the use of daytime running lights reduced automobile accidents by 12% and motorcycles by 10%. Due to the road hazard that motorist face on a daily basis, 50% of traffic accidents occurs during the day which has jumped to 80% in recent years. There both advantages and disadvantages for using Daytime Running Lights.

As a safety precaution, in 1977 Sweden became the first country to employ the use of daytime running lights on their vehicles while other neighboring countries soon followed.
It is believed that since the low levels of ambient light are used during the day it reduces road accidents.  

While it decreases daily accidents DRL increases fuel intake since it needs to power the daytime running lights. This will add carbon dioxide to the environment that is released in to the atmosphere. Some critics stated for most motorcycles have been implementing dipped beam headlight during the day to prevent such incident. By having the dipped beam headlights, it indicates to other drivers and pedestrians that they are near by.
