Neurosurgery (or Neurological Surgery) is the surgical specialty involved in the treatment of disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves

Modern Neurosurgery
Modern neurosurgery has benefited greatly from advances in microsurgery, computer assisted imaging computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), Neurosurgery Conditions, magnetoencephalography (MEG) and the development of stereotactic surgery. Some neurosurgical procedures even involve the use of MRI and functional MRI intraoperatively. As one of the most research-oriented specialties of medicine, the scope of neurosurgery has expanded as new diagnostic techniques allow surgeons to perform more complicated surgeries. Some of the most recent and innovative advances have been radiosurgery using the Gamma knife and Cyberknife for tumor treatment and endovascular surgery for the treatment of aneurysms.

Neurosurgery in India has undergone tremendous change. All Neuro surgically treatable diseases are now diagnosed and referred in good time. We are now in the age of minimally invasive neurosurgery. All essential technological advances as well as qualified personnel are available in the country. Advances in Neuroanaesthesia, neurological intensive care and neuro-imaging technology, the use of surgical microscope, the availability of ultrasonic surgical aspirator have all contributed in playing a significant role in saving life and also preserving all functions, cosmesis and reducing pain, shorter hospital stay, avoiding discomfort.

Neurosurgery has undergone a sea change since the days of Harvey Cushing. The development of bipolar cautery, the use of the surgical microscope, the availability of the ultrasonic surgical aspirator have all contributed to decreasing morbidity and mortality. Advances in neuroanaesthesia, neurosurgical intensive care and neuro-imaging technology have played a significant role. We are now in the age of Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery. The goal and the aims of treatment have shifted. It is no longer enough to save life but preserving of all functions, cosmesis and reducing pain, shorter hospital stay, avoiding discomfort are equally important

Techniques in Neurosurgery enables neurosurgeons to develop their practical skills, keep up with the latest neurosurgical techniques and clinical procedures, and receive "tips and pearls" from leading surgeons.

Each issue focuses on a single topic and provides in-depth information on how the experts handle a particular clinical problem or procedure. Coverage includes reports on the newest techniques and practical guidelines for patient care. All articles are richly illustrated with photographs, X-rays, and drawings.

Neurosurgery Conditions

Neurosurgery is the specialized field of surgery that treats diseases that affect the CNS-the brain and the spine. A neurosurgeon is a medical doctor who has received extensive training in the surgical and medical management of neurological diseases. The field of neurosurgery is one of the most sophisticated surgical specialties and encompasses advanced surgical and imaging technology and new research in molecular neurosurgery and gene therapy. There are five general categories of neurosurgical diseases that are commonly managed by neurosurgeons: cerebrovascular (hemorrhage and aneurysms); traumatic head injury (THI)(traumatic injury caused by accident); degeneration diseases of the spine; tumors in the CNS; functional neurosurgery; surgery for congenital abnormalities; and neurosurgical management of the CNS.
