Carlsbad City Council candidate Jon Wantz stood in front of a packed crowd in the side room of the Ocean House in Carlsbad last night. With current Councilman Keith Blackburn and various business owners looking on, Wantz took a hard-line on how the city should be run, and who should run it. At one point while speaking about the changing city environment, he said "We need civic leaders who have unique ideas to generate revenue from sources other than developers..."
Jon dissected his platform and went into detail about his plans for small business growth, and his plan for intelligent growth. He also discussed the need for an open and responsive government. Wantz said, "It is imperative that our local government representation hear our cries for help and our suggestions for bettering the community." In addition to listening, he said, "... it is even more important that they are responsive and act on issues that are brought before them."
Wantz also took a stand on his fellow candidates. He said, "It’s also time that my fellow candidates come out with their opinions. How can anyone possibly know who to vote for if the facts are not all out on the line. Don’t just make an issue known, let us know what you think and believe." He went on to say about his own campaign, "Anyone who has had the opportunity to follow my campaign so far knows that I always will let my fellow residents know exactly how I feel on an issue, popular or unpopular."
Mr. Wantz ended the evening with a plea to his supporters, acknowledging that he will be outspent three or four to one most likely, that it was up to them to help make change happen and he couldn't do it all by himself. Wantz said, "...but it’s not the money that matters, it’s how far your word can reach. I will be leaning a lot on all of you, my supporters..."
