Port Eliot Fashion Tent

Fashion has always played an important role at Port Eliot and this year the Walled Garden will play host to a new Fashion Tent. The legendary Barbara Hulanicki will once again be joining forces with Luella Bartley to make free clothes live for festival punters.  An iconic figure in British fashion, Barbara founded the now-legendary Biba boutique with her late husband in 1964.
Meanwhile her Port Eliot partner Luella Bartley has made great impact on fashion since her 2000 debut show Daddy, who were The Clash? From New York City to China, Luella’s self-titled brand has global recognition.

Hip and iconic fashion designer Anna Sui – “the Big Apple’s boho queen”– will also be heading to Port Eliot this year. Still as fresh and cutting-edge as she was when she started out 30 years ago, Anna’s self-confessed “girlie rock and roll” designs are instantly recognisable and worn by the likes Nicole Kidman and Liv Tyler. She will be presenting a special event with Andrew Bolton, curator of the world-famous Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the person responsible for everything from Men in Skirts (at the V&A) to WILD – Fashion Untamed; Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy to Blithe Spirit: The Windsor Set.

Leading fashion journalist, Sarah Mower, who writes for US Vogue and has a regular Daily Telegraph style column Prêt-à-rapporter, has just been announced as the British Fashion Council's first Ambassador for Emerging Talent.  Sarah will be taking to the stage to interview the remarkable milliner Stephen Jones who will also be creating one-off hats for festival-goers and running a floral hat trimming workshop as part of Michael Howell’s Port Eliot Flower Show.

Three times Oscar winner Sandy Powell will be bringing some of her award winning costumes for Young Victoria to the festival and talking about her life in design whilst Nigel Waymouth, creator of the original rock-chic boutique, Granny Takes a Trip, will be joining with Plectrum’s Guy Sangster Adams for a special event about the shop.

Fashion everywhere!

Elsewhere on the Estate, The Port Eliot Flower Show, curated by Michael Howells and set in the Orangery gardens will pay homage to the traditional British summer flower show and will feature demonstrations, displays, music, art and fashion all on a horticultural theme – not to mention exceptional tea, cakes and exhibitions in the Orangery tearoom. Working across the worlds of film and fashion, Michael Howells has realised some of the most spectacular and ambitious sets of recent times – designing numerous sets for John Galliano, Alexander McQueen, Mario Testino and Nick Knight.

The legendary Central St Martin’s College of Fashion and Design, birthplace of so many iconic British fashion designers and journalists, will be heading to Port Eliot for the first time, and will be hosting its own tent next to the stately home with a range of classes that everyone can join.

Flamboyant artist Grayson Perry, 47, won the Turner Prize in 2003 for his ceramic work depicting subjects at odds with their attractive appearance. He received his prize dressed as his alter-ego, Claire, wearing a pink dress embroidered with bunny rabbits. Claire will be modelling some of Stephen Jones's hats as well as being interviewed.

With music from Cornish sea shanty singers The Fisherman’s Friends (who have just signed £1million record deal), the picaresque Caught By The River nature stage that overlooks the estuary, Wild Swimming with Kate Rew, the legendary One Minute Disco, The Idler’s Academy of Philosophy, Husbandry and Merriment opening its doors for the first time and so much more, Port Eliot is not to be missed.
