Radon Tee With The Worshipful Mayor of Gateshead, Councillor Michael Hood
Radon Tee UK coordinators, ProTen Services were delighted to have the opportunity to meet Councillor Michael Hood, The Worshipful Mayor of Gateshead at a recent exhibition.
ProTen Services spoke to the Mayor about radon gas and how it affects not only the South West of England, but also many parts of the North East.
As the predictive maps show, areas around Gateshead including Sunderland, Morpeth and Bishop Auckland all lie in so-called radon Affected Areas.
ProTen Services also emphasised that the map, produced by the Health Protection Agency (HPA) and British Geological Survey (BGS) was only a prediction of areas where homes with high radon levels were likely to be found, and that high concentrations of radon could be found in properties anywhere in the country, regardless of the map’s predictions.
Gateshead has had a Mayor since 1835 when it became a Borough council. The Mayor carries out many important ceremonial duties, presiding over full meetings of the Council and representing the borough at civic functions in Gateshead and its neighbouring authorities.
US non-profit organisation, CanSAR (Cancer Survivors Against Radon) is dedicated to preventing radon-induced lung cancer and saving lives through education and awareness, and is sponsoring the Radon Tee World Trek 2010. The campaign aims to bring social awareness to communities through the power of photos, videos and personal stories.
