June 15, 2010 - PRLog -- Travel Green Wisconsin has recognized EcoFair360 as a recipient of the Travel Green Certification. Travel Green Wisconsin awarded the Fair a score of 73 points, well above the 30 points required for certification. EcoFair360 is a three-day celebration of all things green which will be held at the Walworth County Fairgrounds in Elkhorn, Wisconsin on July 16-18, 2010.

To achieve Travel Green certification, EcoFair360 had to meet a wide range of requirements showing that fair practices and policies will minimize environmental impact to the Walworth County Fairgrounds and the surrounding area. These include reduction of waste through reuse and recycling, water conservation and wastewater management, energy efficiency, benefit to the local community and to local farms and food providers, landscape conservation, and encouragement of alternative transportation.

Highlights of the Fair certification include reduced admission for attendees who ride bikes, workshops and seminars covering a wide range of responsible practices, locally produced food and drink in the food court, and a ban on plastic water bottles. Fees collected for parked cars will be spent to purchase carbon offsets. EcoFair360 has also implemented a "leave no trace" policy for all exhibitors and presenters.

"It was a lot of extra work, but it was well worth it," says EcoFair360 coordinator Catherine McQueen. "The certification process forced us to look closely at our own practices and make the extra effort to be sure we're walking the walk, not just talking the talk. Now we have the certification to prove it."

Travel Green Wisconsin is a voluntary program that reviews, certifies and recognizes attractions in Wisconsin that have made a commitment to reduce their environmental impact. It encourages participants to evaluate their operations, set goals and take specific actions towards environmental, social, and economic sustainability, and is the first of its kind in the country. "Travel Green is a great example of the Midwest leading the way on green," says McQueen. "This fits right in with the goal of EcoFair360, which is to showcase Walworth County as a hot spot for entrepreneurs and businesses in the new green economy." McQueen is a cofounder of the Eco-Vision Sustainable Learning Center in nearby Delavan, Wisconsin, which is sponsoring the Fair.

Since it was launched statewide in 2007, Travel Green Wisconsin has certified more than 260 tourism businesses including lodging, restaurants, retail stores, tour operators, state parks, convention centers, golf courses, and a range of indoor and outdoor attractions.
