Man is a gregarious animal attaching a lot of premium to perceptions about his appearance by his peers, friends and relatives. His lush locks have been with him always and added to his youthful appeal. Hair is an integral part of your self image. So when hair loss occurs in youth, it can seriously rock your confidence. The social stigma and myths attached to hair loss make the conscious male anxious. Since he pays considerable attention to grooming, he is frustrated when there is very little he can do to get back his lost hair. I have always seen a patient coming for consultation to my office at “Darling Buds, Chandigarh” coming with a photo of his early adulthood and the entire family rues the complete hair loss. Personal grooming and hygiene are important for hair texture, luster and sheen. Those who do not clean their hair regularly will loose more hair to the dirt, grime chemicals, etc. which lodge on hair when one goes to the outdoors. This leads to clogging of hair pores and dandruff which are inimical to healthy hair growth.
At long last and after having depleted his financial, emotional and hair resources even further, the hapless patient knocks at the plastic surgeon’s door! This is where in most cases the buck stops.
The doctor needs to rule out the other medical causes of hair loss, which if present, hair comes back without much ado and hair transplants are not needed. The plastic surgeon therefore will subject his patient to a battery of tests in his laboratory which includes biochemistry and also videoscopy to know the scalp condition. He therefore tries to establish what the cause is- is the soil responsible or is the seed defective. This “soil and seed theory” is the basic concept in diagnosing and treating hair loss.
At this stage, after having tried all potions, lotions and motions, the patient is very amenable to a pre-hair transplant routine to which the plastic surgeon puts him on.
