June 13, 2010 - PRLog -- The latest dramatic project of Debra Leigh Scott, writer, playwright and arts edu-preneur, will be showcased with a scene performed at New Light 2010, the Philadelphia festival of women artists, running from June 16 to June 20 at The Playground space of The Adrienne Theatre, 2030 Sansom Street, Philadelphia, PA.  Directed by Ellen Podolsky and starring Jan Michener and Patricia Mayer,  "Purple Girl" is a play about the clash between mothers and daughters, between second and third wave feminism, the disconnect between the radical idealism of the 60s and the corporate ideals of the new Millenium.

"I wanted to examine the conflicts that arise between the two generations of women - the women who came of age in the sixties, and those who came of age during the eighties and nineties - in regard to life-style, ideals, and values," Scott said.  "This is a play that brings those conflicts into focus through the relationship of a mother and daughter - the mother very much still steeped in the values and beliefs of the sixties counterculture, and the daughter determined to conquer the corporatized world, which she sees as the "real" world, as opposed to her mother's long-dead fantasy."

Debra is also an award-winning writer of fiction.  Her work has appeared both nationally and internationally in literary magazines like The Oxford American, TPQ, Miranda, The Chattahoochee Review.  A collection of her short stories, Other Likely Stories, is being published this summer by Sowilo Press.  Her novel, Piety Street, the first of a trilogy, will be published by year's end by New Door Books.

The outspoken Founding Director of the arts-support organization Hidden River Arts, Debra has lectured extensively on issues of arts education, special education and the arts, pay equity for educators, and alternative educational methodology for alternative learners. She is currently involved with a documentary/book project called 'JUNCT: THE TRASHING OF HIGHER ED.
